What is Change Management?

The Association for Change Management Professionals (ACMP) defines change management as "the application of knowledge, skills, abilities, methodologies, processes, tools, and techniques to transition an individual or group from a current state to a future state to achieve expected benefits and organizational objectives. Change management processes, when implemented appropriately, enable individuals within an organization to transition efficiently and effectively through change to achieve the organization's objectives. Change management is an integral part of the overall change process and ideally begins at the initiation of change."

At its core, change management is a set of processes shaped by each organization's culture, needs, and objectives. These processes may differ not only from one organization to another, but even across departments within the same organization. For change management to succeed, it is crucial to establish a dedicated unit, design the process in a structured and project-based manner, and ensure employees are trained—or even certified—as Change Management Professionals. These foundations enable organizations to navigate change effectively and achieve lasting success.
